La Porte, Texas is a small community in Robertson County, Texas. It was founded in 1881 by brothers Amos and Charles LaPorte. The community grew rapidly due to the discovery of oil in nearby Bass Pro Shale field and was named after LaPorte County seat, which at the time was located in neighboring Wichita County. In 1907, the town became part of Midland when that city was created from parts of Robertson and Kenedy Counties. La Porte experienced rapid growth during World War II when the military constructed several factories there. By 1970, its population had increased to over 1,000 people. However, today La Porte remains a small agricultural town with few commercial interests other than agriculture.
