Despite small size relative to other large Texas towns - population density at 1,500 people per square mile - much activity takes place within its limits: business districts are found near Main Street while churches are scattered throughout the community.10 The first Europeans to settle in this area were Englishmen who had come into present-day Williamson County via Arkansas Territory during 1849-1850 on what is now known as Old Hwy 183 east of present day Lubbock. By 1863 all Germans living west of Mason City had been driven out by Indian attacks so new settlers began arriving from England with families coming overland through Leavenworth or Waco before sailing down the Trinity River into central Texas beginning around 1867-68 under steamboats belonging to James Fenton Cooke Sr., son of James Fenton Cooke Jr., one of America's early entrepreneurs interested in colonizing what would become Central Mexicovia land grants received from Mexican president Antonio de Mejia on February 14, 1824 pursuant to Treaty Of Guadalupe Hidalgo following American victory at San Jacinto Battle on April 6th that year against Mexican forces led by Gen.- José Antonio Guerrero y Costilla y Mesa et al.. After Louisiana Purchase lands were acquired by the United States government in 1848 including much surrounding territory included now within Johnston Parishincluding parts neighboring Lubbock & Springdale countieswas organized into El Paso County......... On July 16th 1860 Josiah Gregg announced construction began upon building an iron bridge spanning Buffalo Bayou connecting Baylor University campus with Clear Fork Valley....... This Bridge became known locally simply as The Gregg Bridge which still stands today...........El PasoCounty seat moved from Logansportto la marque June 15th 1861 effective date.........
