La Marque is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. It is located on the banks of the Brazos River. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. La Marque is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now La Marque were French traders in 1685. In 1836, General Sam Houston purchased land in what would become Hudspeth County from two Spanish families and named it San Antonio de la Nueva Galicia (New Spain). The name was changed to Hudspeth County in 1837 when Congress passed an act designating Texas as a national territory. In 1845, Hudspeth County became one of 22 counties that formed Dallas County when Dallas was organized as a city. From 1880 to 1890, LaMarque was the county seat ofDallas County and then again from 1902 until its incorporation into Austin City Limits Municipal District No. 1 on November 3, 1952. On January 1, 1957 LaMarque became an independent city with its own police department and mayoralty under Mayor Harry Helmside In 1936, some farmers living near present day La Marque began growing corn for local consumption rather than shipping it away for processing into food items like flour or meat that were necessary for making goods sold by Texaco gasoline stations across the state Capitol complex on I-35W in Austin; these farmers started calling their new town "LaMarqu" because they considered themselves to be part of this new community developing around them without any formal connection to Houston or Dallas counties whatsoever. On October 4th 1916 Major General John J services led his 5th Cavalry Regiment during World War I while stationed at Fort Worth Star Ranch just east of present day LaMarque; while here they also erected a railroad spur leading up Goose Creek Canyon which later became Johnson Road afterGeneral John J served as Commanding Officer & Director of Public Works for Ft Worth Star Ranch during WWI (& operates today as Johnson Rd.) As more Texans left rural White Oak Country behind and moved into cities seeking opportunities and easier access to education and jobs outside those areas Clifton McNaught donated 10 acres (40 ha) bordering Slaughter Branch Creek northward Just northeast of present day downtown LaMarque magnetizing many soon-to-be settlers who had heard about McNaught's donation but hesitated or refused due to apprehension about being too close both geographically & politically toHouston/DALLAS Counties Many people who had originally settled around Slaughter Branch Creek (northwest Just northeast of downtown LaMarche) decided that they too should tie themselves Identically thereto & form another settlement called "Lamarques" After much discussion through mail starting February 1909 lots had been sold within Lamarques boundaries forming Wagon Wheel Subdivision including parts now known as Independence Heights NE & Slaughter Branch Creek NW . This soil has been heavily cultivated over time resulting in: numerous creeks running through our townsite providing clean water not only for residents but cattle ALSO fed off these same creeks irrigating crops year round creating lush lawns now visible from most streets thru out our communities usefull rain gardens also !! Today almost all citizens are familiar with either their hometown’s name or at least basic landmarks unique unto their enclave including West Side High School
