La Marque is a small town located in Webb County, Texas. The population was 1,847 at the 2010 census. La Marque is unincorporated and has no government services. La Marque is located on the Mexico-United States border. The first contact between the two countries occurred in 1836 when Mexican soldiers invaded Texas. The Mexicans named this area LaMarque after their captain who led them there. The town was founded by citizens of Corpus Christi who wanted to get away from the bad influences of that city. They started trading goods with Mexico and building a trading post near present day LaMarque in 1838. In 1840, Spanish colonists from Galveston arrived in what is now Webb County and set up shop here as well. When it became apparent that they were not going to win over the local Texans, they abandoned their efforts to establish themselves here in 1848 and left for San Antonio. In 1849, artifacts found at an excavation near modern day LaMarque were exhibited at a national exposition in St Louis, Missouri which caught the attention of John McCoy, an entrepreneur from Corpus Christi who decided to move his business operations into central Texas based on what he saw as potential opportunities presented by this new development. He bought some land east of LaMarque and began developing it into what would become McCoy’s rancho (land grant). From its inception until 1865 it was one of only a few large ranches remaining within Webb County following the Homestead Act (1862). By 1870 McCoy had increased his holdings to more than 2 million acres including much of today’s Webb Countysphere north of Interstate 10 and west of FM 727/Shreveport Road and east side along I-10 outside Casa Grande National Monument boundary). McCoy’s properties remain one of history's most significant agricultural strongholds even though many are now used for other purposes such as housing or road maintenance; however, his name still appears on numerous deeds or street names throughout our community today! In 1907, laMarque was annexed by Austin and became part of the new city limits.
