La Marque, Texas is a city in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. La Marque is located on the west bank of the Trinity River and borders Fort Worth to the south, Arlington to the north, and Denton to the east. The first settler in what is now La Marque was James Fenton who came from Scotland in 1837. He built a cabin on a bluff overlooking the river. Fenton named his settlement after his mother's home country of Scotland: "Lamarre" means "place where my mother died". In 1841, John Hogg purchased land near La Marque from James Fenton for $460 dollars cash. Hogg developed this land into one of Tarrant County's largest cotton plantations with over 100 slaves working it at various times during its history. In 1865, following Confederate surrender at Appomattox Court House, most of Tarrant County became Union territory under President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. As a result of this change incontrol, much of La Marque became unincorporated within Tarrant County proper until 1907 when it incorporated as part of Junction City and later still Junction City Airport. The city has experienced an increase in development throughout its history as well as growth in population due to various reasons such as oil exploration and production activities that have taken place within its boundaries; however many aspects have remained relatively static or have undergone modest improvement over time including infrastructure (such as streetlights and water mains), public services (such as police stations and fire halls), retailrcation (including several small grocery stores), and downtown businesses (including several restaurants). La Marque is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,883 at the 2010 census. La Marque was founded by African Americans in 1881 as part of the Reconstruction period. It became a white-only town in 1907. The post office called La Marque from 1881 to 1901 and again from 1904 to 1909. The first store built there was operated by James A. Lewis and his son, John Lewis. In 1903, George Waring bought the store and changed its name to LaMarque Mercantile Company Limited. He operated it until his death in 1951. In 1969, LaMarque became an independent city under the direction of Mayor Ernesto Morales.* The main industry in La Marque for many years has been agriculture; however, during the past few decades some businesses have started up such as a nearby medical center and several restaurants/cafeterias that serve local cuisine. There are also a few small businesses located within walking distance of most residents which provide services such as construction or lawn care assistance*
La Marque was founded in 1836 by José Antonio Reyna and his wife, Maria de la Concepción. The Reynas were from the town of Málaga, Andalusia, Spain. The first post office at La Marque was established in 1837. The Reynas bought land in what is now La Marque and started to build a cotton gin and mill. They also began to sell goods such as flour, milk, butter, eggs and other produce. In 1840 they built a church which served the community for many years. In 1845 José Antonio Reyna died leaving his wife with two children: Santiago and Héctorine. Santiago married Félix Avilés who owned a cattle farm in Gonzales County; they had six children together: Mercedes (1846-1924), Adelaida (1848-1925), Agustín (1850-1920), Carmen (1853-1927), Manuela (1857-1939) and Lola Isabelle (1862-1945). Héctorine married Francisco Martínez who lived near Gonzales County on a ranch called Rancho San Miguel de Allende; they had one child: Julián Enrique Martínez y Aguilar (1900-1985).
