La Marque is a small town in Kleberg County, Texas, United States. The population was 705 at the 2010 census. La Marque is located in the Driftless Plains region of the Great Plains and is surrounded by Antelope Hills on all sides but its eastern border. It is about 20 miles northeast of Amarillo and about 25 miles northwest of Fort Worth. The first white person to live in La Marque was John Capps who arrived there circa 1847. The first post office was established in La Marque in 1850. A store, "Capps' Store", was opened at the east end of town by Wm. H. Fenton on Main Street in 1851-2 and continued to be operated until around 1865 when it burned down due to a lack of funds for repairs. In 1861, Captain James Boggs built a log cabin on what is now FM 971 south of town which became his home during the Civil War period as he served with Company K (4th Texas Cavalry) under General Forrest at Primm Mountain during the Battle of Pea Ridge (1862). After being discharged from duty from that unit he returned to La Marque where he operated a general store until his death in 1889. He bequeathed money to help finance Baylor University's purchase of an agricultural college campus near Waco, Texas, and also left land grants totaling 527 acres (222 hectares) within present day LaMarque limits along Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard/FM 2714 just north of Slaughter Road off IH 35W just west of junction with US 82 between this area and FM 5018 seem like they would've gone right up against some pretty high Baylor fences! LtCol Arthur Pugh settled hereabouts before 1881 when he purchased 636 acres (241 hectares) adjacent to Fenton's land grant including parts now within modern day LaMarque limits east side Slaughter Road/IH 35W just west side junction US 82 between this area & FM 5018 seems like they would've definitely been close enough!!! Lt Col Pugh donated an acre or so each year starting in 1881 thru 1886 towards building & providing school instruction for Upward Bound students attending Baylor College then known as Sam Houston State Teachers College beginning fall term 1888 In 1898 Dr JB Hinton established an hospital here probably because there wasn't anything else openable nearby other than Ft Worth then closer still Amarillo! So much for that idea that la Haire couldn't support even 1 doctor LOL

La Marque was a small town in Willacy County, Texas, that was founded in 1887. The community grew quickly due to the railroad presence and its location on the Austin-San Antonio Railway. By 1912, LaMarque had a population of over 250 people. The post office operated from 1887 until it closed in 1916. The Austin-San Antonio Railway reached La Marque in 1889 and helped spur the growth of the community. The railway also served as a major economic driver for La Marque during its early years. In 1912, the railway merged with the San Antonio and Rio Grande Western Railroad to form the Texaco Railway system. As Texaco became one of America's largest oil companies, LaMarque saw increased development around it. In 1984, Texaco filed for bankruptcy and dissolved its business holdings in Texas. However, many of LaMarque's original businesses survived and continue to operate today. Today, LaMarque is home to several heritage-listed buildings including the old Baptist church which was built in 1886 and remains standing today; as well as two bars - The Saloon & Grille (founded 1904) and Jockey Club (established 1945).
