La Marque is a small town in Waller County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. La Marque is located on the banks of the Brazos River. The LaMarque community was founded in 1885 by settlers from Illinois and Indiana. It was named for Maurice LaMarche, a French general who helped lead an army against Mexico in 1846. The community post office was established in 1889 and became known as "Maurice LaMarche." In 1923, the name of the post office was changed to "La Marque". In 1938, 3% of all school children in Waller County were taught by nuns who ran a convent near La Marque. Today only about 10% of all local students are taught by nuns. The main economic activity today is farming and ranching; however, other activities include manufacturing (textiles), services (trucking), and tourism. The primary employer is the Waller-Brazos School District which employs over 150 people full-time including 50 nuns teaching high school students. 2 percent of all jobs are within education or health care; this number will continue to grow as more women enter into careers in these industries. There are also many small businesses that have sprung up around la marque due to its proximity to larger cities such as Austin and Houston but they generally do not rely on agriculture or ranching so much as they do services such as restaurant work or home improvement

The use of conete gas continued to increase during World War I thanks to advances in chemistry and technology; however, due to its dangerous volatility and high toxicity levels it was not generally portable or deployable outside conflict zones. In 1886, the Houston & Texas Central Railroad extended its line through La Marque and made it an important transportation hub in the region. The town declined in popularity after World War II until revived in the early 1990s as a tourist destination due to its history and architecture
