After the end of World War I, La Marque lost its status as a military post and it began to decline in importance until it was abandoned in the early 1920s. In 1932, LaMarque was re-established as an independent village with a population of 100 residents. It grew rapidly after becoming an agricultural center due to its location within easy driving distance of several major markets including Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and El Paso. By 1945, LaMarque had reached 1,500 residents and it became an important cultural center due to its role in the Texas Folklife Festival which took place every year in nearby Houston from 1951-1957.LaMarque also played host to numerous Auto Races throughout the years which helped support local businesses
The city of La Marque, Texas was founded in 1876 by the combination of two earlier settlements, LaMarque and Beaumont. The first town in the area was founded on November 14, 1871 by John A. Browning and James H. Leary. It became a post office on January 10, 1872. In 1886, the community of La Marque merged with the smaller community of Beaumont to form a new town named after General Sam Houston. The merger created an agricultural center that prospered due to its fertile soil and water resources. In 1902, the city annexed the towns of Wellston and Greenville to its boundaries for economic reasons; Wellston had been served as a small rural village since it was established in 1886. In 1916, La Marque began annexing neighboring villages for annexation into its limits – this process continued until 1935 when all but one of those villages were annexed into La Marque proper. On October 12th, 1906 the first automobile ran offthe road in what would become known as "LaMarke's First Auto Crash". This event helped spur development within the city because it demonstrated that cars could be ridden around without danger or damage from traffic congestion or accidents
