The La Marque Rifle and Pistol Club was founded in 1892. The first guns were pistols, but the club began to interest in rifles in 1909. In 1912, they bought a rifle from Captain John Bigham of the US Coast Guard. La Marque is a town in Webb County, Texas, United States. The population was 714 at the 2010 census. La Marque is located in the Panhandle of Texas on the border of Webb and Potter counties. The town was founded by Michael J. Brown in 1881 as a result of his land grants to men who had helped him build Fort Worth. The name "LaMarque" ( pronounced "lay-mar-keh") comes from Spanish for "the trail that leads to the fort." In 1907, LaMarque's post office moved from Fort Worth to its present site, just east of Interstate 35W along US 71. In 1916, LaMarque became the county seat of Webb County after Potter County was merged into it from Garden Valley County. It has remained that way since then. In 1935, LaMarque joined the rest of Webb County in forming what would become San Antonio–Webb COUNTY TEXAS RAILROAD CORPORATION (later Southwestern Railway Company). Today, Amtrak operates passenger trains through La Marque station on their Eagle Rider service between San Antonio and Austin/San Marcos every day except Sunday morning or when Amtrak operations are limited to Dallas/Fort Worth due to construction work on an adjacent trackage project; both railroads have collocated their facilities within walking distance of each other across I-35W.
