Knives were first manufactured in La Marque, Texas in the early 1800s. The first knife manufacturer in La Marque was John H. Ladd. In 1864, Samuel P. Tucker opened a shop on Main Street and began manufacturing knives under the name of Tucker & Sons. By 1870, Tucker had moved his shop to Second Street and began producing knives by hand. By 1903, Tucker & Sons was operating as a store with an additional workshop on Third Street. In 1912, the company became known as Ladd-Tucker Knife Company and continued production until 1958 when it merged with International Knives Corporation.
La Marque is a small town in Dallas County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,567 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area. La Marque is located on FM 587 and TX 288. The community was founded by W.H. McConnell in 1892 as a small post office named McMullenville, after his son William H., also an early settler. In 1907, McConnell's grandson John A. McConnell bought the land that now makes up La Marque and developed it into a small town with a store, schoolhouse and two churches (one Baptist) in 1914. In 1922, the first laqueros opened their doors to the community when they started importing Mexican leather from Juárez for resale here in America; this led to its current name of "LaMarque." The original Post Office moved from its original location to its present building on Main Street in 1951; it remains one of La Marque's most important buildings today. As any small town grows more established over time, new businesses are inevitable - such was the case with LaMarque's Chamber of Commerce which began operations in 1954 as simply the Citizens' Association for Civic Improvement & Development (ACAID). With ever-growing needs for services and events throughout the year - both large and small - ACAID quickly became something much larger than just a civic group –today’s AACD offers essential support to local government through programs like marketing/public relations/field service liaison and web management/event planning

The first knives were used for butchering. The first blades had no cutting edges and were made from bone or cloth. There was a need for a sharper blade to do the job properly so people began to make their own knives.
In 1836, La Marque was founded by the brothers John and Andrew Walton. They were pioneers in the oil business and decided to found a town in Texas because of its potential for oil production. The Walton family built a large rancho here, which they named Rancho San Antonio de Bexar after their ancestor San Antonio de Bautista. The town was founded on November 15, 1836, by order of Governor James Kenedy. La Marque quickly became a thriving community with strong trade ties to both Mexico and Texas. The town's economy depended on woolen textiles, cattle, and other agricultural products exported from Mexico City. The original mayor of La Marque was Isidro Gomez y Uribe. He served from 1840 to 1848; during this time the town experienced some growth but also some political turmoil due to Anglo-Mexican tensions over land ownership and trade relationships. In 1852 Gomez y Uribe was replaced by José Joaquín Herrera Beltrán as mayor; he would serve until his death in 1861. The first post office opened in LaMarque on February 5th, 1840; it continued into operation until it closed on October 1st 1940 due to population growth and infrastructure improvements needed for faster mail service (the present day FM 530 station is located within walking distance of the old post office). During its early years LaMarque had two churches: one German Lutheran, later converted into an Episcopal church serving Mexican Americans living in the area at that time; as well as Spanish Catholic services operated out of a small chapel adjacent to the railroad depot used by local farmers for religious instruction according to Spanish custom at that time (today’s Gonzales Street Baptist Church is located near Walmart across from I-10 exit 493). In 1845 Hernandez married Margarita Martinez who arrived with her parents from Tamaulipas province in southern Mexico following the Mexican–American War (1846-1848). Margarita's father had fought for Pancho Villa during the war while her mother died during childbirth; Margarita herself was wounded several times during the conflict including once enough so that she required multiple surgeries before returning home to help her father run our farmstead fulltime when she turned eighteen years old in 1850. After marrying Hernandez, Margarita started raising children themselves outside of LaMarque – one child lived with them year-round while Margarita took care of others back home – until they all came west together around 1865 whenmargaritamartinezmigratedtola marquesoutheastofthesouthwestcoastofthesuenosangelesareain1866 seekingabetterlifeforherfamilylivinginthedeeplandsnorthoftheborderwithMexico
The La Marque post office was established in 1881, and served the community of La Marque until it closed in 1936. The first postmaster was John D. Payne.
