La Marque, Texas is a census-designated place in McDowell County, Texas, United States. The population was 714 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. LaMarque was founded by John A. McAllister in 1871 as a ranching community on the banks of the Trinity River adjacent to present-day Arlington Heights and Grapevine. The name "LaMarque" means "place where the trees grow." The first post office in La Marque was established in 1872; it closed in 1903 due to lack of mail service. In 1902, a school district was organized and La Marque became its seat. From 1907 until 1935, LaMarque was also the site of one of two county agencies that served McDowell County: the other being Waco (later renamed Austin). In 1934, Laredo absorbed McDowell County into its jurisdiction and Laredo's new post office took over operations at La Marque. The town ceased operation altogether on July 1, 1959 when it merged with McKinney into an enlarged McLennan County government which included all of West Texas within its borders including La Marquée Township within McNary County proper (now El Paso County). In 1990, following annexation by Phoenix Municipal Utility District No. 2 (PED2), most residents of Laredo moved out to their new city while those who remained were re-zoned from rural to suburban properties as part of PED2's plan for denser development along routes I-10 and Loop 1604 throughout much of central Mesa Valley outside Phoenix proper..
