La Marque, Texas is located in Medina County, Texas. The town was founded in 1839 by General Sam Houston and his wife Anna Maria Key. LaMarque grew rapidly during the 1840s due to its location on the Red River and its access to shipping. In 1849, La Marque became the site of a protracted cattle drive that saw over 400 thousand head of beef transported from Missouri to New Orleans. By 1860, La Marque had become a small farming community with a population of around 100 people. During the American Civil War, La Marque sided with the Confederacy and was blockaded by Union forces for several months. After Confederate fighters destroyed most of the town's buildings, they retreated upriver. In 1865, after Union troops burned down much of La Marque (including key local businesses) as part of an effort to starve Confederate soldiers into surrendering, General Houston rebuilt the town and renamed it Houston Heights in honor of his fallen friend and predecessor at Texan Commandery Fort Worth Major-General James Boggs. Houston Heights served as headquarters for both Union General Ulysses S. Grant during the winter Siege of Petersburg (1865-1866) and Rebel General Robert Ewart Scott during their ill-fated attempt to march on Brownsville in late November 1865. During Reconstruction era efforts by President Ulysses S. Grant to reëstablish white supremacy throughout America via executive order known as "The White House Notes", Houston Heights came under suspicion because many African Americans were living there illegally or working off public assistance while also maintaining some degree of autonomy within their own households outside Of White society . Consequently, many residents disbanded their militias or fled la marque following Ulysses S.'s orders; this caused increased tension between black residents and white authorities until eventually one group broke through curfew on Christmas Eve 1867 when about 25 men stormed the White House gates seeking Asylum - only for military escort back inside moments later en masse
