La Marque is a town located in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 571 at the 2010 census. La Marque was founded in 1878 by James H. Fenton and wife Emma Willis Fenton as a station on the Central Pacific Railroad. It was named for General Antonio de León y Costilla, who fought against Mexican insurgents during the Texas Revolution of 1836. The townsite was platted in 1879 by James H. Fenton and wife Emma Willis Fenton with assistance from partners J.F. Beaumont and Wm Burchill. The first post office was established in 1880; La Marque would become its central business district. On July 15, 1886, La Marque's incorporation as a town followed an act of the State Legislature approved by Governor John Connally. In 1907, LaMarque voters passed an ordinance setting up a water supply system that continues to serve the community to this day (although improvements have been made over time). In 1912-13 local farmers banded together to form what became known as The Farmers' Alliance to fight against state regulation of prices for goods exported from Hudspeth County through Austin to Mexico City en route to export markets abroad; this effort ultimately failed but helped lay the groundwork for later success when Texas join other states within the United States Congress in 1913 and beyond
