La Marque was founded in 1853 by Gideon Weller and his wife, Maria. The Wellers were the first family to settle in La Marque. They built a log cabin on a small island in the Brazos River. The Wellers served as town officials and merchants for many years. In 1879, Gideon Weller donated land to the town for a school and church. The townspeople named their new school after Gideon's mother, Martha Elizabeth Weller. After Mrs.Weller's death, the school continued to be called Martha Elizabeth School until it closed in 1951. La Marque grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s due to its convenient location on the Brazos River, its trade opportunities with other communities within reach, and its reputation as a place where people of all backgrounds could mix and learn together.
