La Marque, Texas is a small town in west-central Texas and the seat of La Marque County. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo–Texarkana, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first post office for La Marque was established on November 2, 1872. The name of the town originated from a Spanish word meaning "the meadow." The original settler in La Marque were two brothers who named themselves Martinez and Hernandez. They came overland from New Mexico Territory in 1874. In 1886 they organized a cattle drive that brought thousand head of cattle to Amarillo. In 1902, a store and hotel were built on Main Street in La Marque by Wm. Henson and his son Geo Henson Jr.. They became known as "Henson's Hotel". Mr. Laddie Store opened in 1907 and continued until it closed its doors in 1962 due to economic problems caused by World War II shortages of materials brought over by American troops stationed in Europe. The Post Office reopened on October 9, 1962 under new management with Sallie Aitken as the first female postmaster On July 1, 1966 LaMarquese High School opened its doors after more than 10 years of planning and construction by Mrs. Alice Jantzis Richardson On January 25th 1969 an all-girls football team won their first state championship against Marshall

La Marque, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The community was founded in 1875 by James E. LaMarque and his wife, Sarah. The LaMarques were the first white settlers in Hudspeth County. They built a cabin on the current site of La Marque in 1875. In 1916, the LaMarques sold their land to Wernher Lipscomb for $2,000. Wernher Lipscomb established the Hudspeth County School District there in 1917. In 1933, John J. McClendon purchased land east of La Marque from Wernher Lipscomb and began construction of what would become known as McClendon-Hudson High School. The school was dedicated on September 12, 1934, and served students from La Marque through Hudson City. It was one of three high schools opened in Hudspeth County that year by McClendon-Hudson Superintendent Harry Gentry Jr.. After World War II ended, the school became known as McAllister-Hudson High School and served students from Hawthorne through McKinney before it closed its doors in 1987. Today, only a few remains of McClendon-Hudson High School are still visible on campus; most of the building has been replaced with flats or housing units over the years. However, portions of the original campus can be seen near where Old Main currently stands on West Virgil Street within walking distance of many residents’ homes today. What is left of McAllister-Hudson High School is also now used as a community center for nearby residents living below high poverty levels (the building does not have occupancy permits). The history and legacy of La Marque is fascinating due to its unique position within Hudspeth County - at one time one of America's poorest counties - as well as its role within Texan society during both prewar times (1875–1920) and postwar years (1921–1987).
The first settlers in La Marque were Perez and Hidalgo. The town was founded on December 15, 1839 by José de la Loma and his wife Santa Ana. The first store opened in 1840. On July 6, 1845, the Mexican–American War began and La Marque was burned by the United States army. On October 10, 1846, La Marque was granted incorporation as a town by the Texas Rangers under General Antonio Cámpora. In 1850, a post office was established in La Marque and remained open until 1907. A cotton gin was built in 1854 and operated until 1902. In 1861, John Witherspoon of Illinois organized the Baylor College of Medicine at Austin and donated land for a medical school in LaMarque. Witherspoon also funded $3,000 for construction of a hospital which became known as Baylor Medical School today. Drs James Bagby (1862-1947), George Niven (1864-1957) and Alexander Fleming (1865-1948) served as professors at Baylor from 1862 to 1947. A cotton gin continued to be operational into 1903 when it was replaced by the present day Cotton Belt Plantation Museum . In 1909 the town fathers erected an opera house which remains extant today as one of its many features - also contributing to its status as a tourist destination
