LaMarque is located on FM 759 and TX 278 near Grapevine. The first permanent settler in what would become Hudspeth County was James Aiken who arrived in 1851 from Kentucky. He designated portions of what are now LaMarque and Deer Park as his home property. In 1880 John Fenton made an agreement with Aiken to purchase land from him which included what is now LaMarque Township. The Fentons were among the earliest settlers of Hudspeth County and built their home on a bluff overlooking the Trinity River. In 1881 James Hogg purchased some land east of present-day LaMarque from the Fentons and set about building a log cabin known as "Hogg's Fort". This initial log structure served as Hogg's headquarters until it was destroyed by termites in 1906. Other early settlers in this area include David Pickett, Wm J Durham, Chas Soper and Tom Sellers who all started out farming milkspun cotton orchards on their lands that eventually became part of present-day Grapevine Township. In 1901 Hermann Müller purchased some additional land southeast ofmodern-day La Marque from David Pickett which formed part of the original 10 acre tract that later became known as Dutchman's Bend Ranch . Müller established himself as a cattle rancher here before moving to Amarillo in 1916 where he ran a feed mill until his death in 1951 . In 1930 Sam Houston High School opened its doors within walking distance of Dutchman's Bend Ranch after Campaign for Local Education president Lamar Alexander donated $10,000 towards its construction contingent upon it becoming an accredited school . In 1936 Jesse Byrd organized a local farmers' market which operated every Saturday at Dutchman's Bend Ranch until 1949 when county officials moved it to Village Green Shopping Center due to increasing competition fromHoustonians purchasing groceries thereinstead . Dutchman’s Bend ranch went through several ownership changes during its history including being bought by attorney General George P White (1870-1949) then property owner/ grazer Harry Coody (1924-1950). Ultimately it reverted back to White’s ownership following his death without any heirs being found so final disposition remains unknown today

La Marque became a farming community and cattle ranching center. It was named after the Lámpara de Arriba (The Lamp of the Top), an old Spanish fort that stood on the banks of the Rio Grande. In 1849, La Marque merchants merged with two other communities to form Corpus Christi. After Texas achieved its independence from Mexico in 1846, LaMarque's commerce declined becauseCrossroads post office was opened at San Antonio instead. However, it began to grow again after local entrepreneurs established businesses in shipping and agriculture around 1870-1875. In 1916, LaMarque voters adopted a ordinance establishing government as a town under the jurisdiction of Corpus Christi County. On December 16 of that year, Mayor Héctor Crespo dedicated an outdoor fountain called "Fountain of Peace" to commemorate Mexican Independence Day at Main Street and 5th Avenue SW. The name for Fountain Park later changed to "Fountain Park." A fire destroyed most of downtown LaMarque on February 8, 1951; however, within three months it had been rebuilt including new buildings such as City Hall which still stands today (and is used as the city hall annex). The first woman mayor in Texas was elected here when Florence Ayer Anderson won election on November 3rd following a runoff against future Governor Dick Chappell Jr., who also served as mayor at that time
