Some of the earliest buildings date back to before 1865 when many families took up farming around what is now downtown Kyle while others built their homes around Missionary Baptist Church which still stands today (1896). In 1827, land totaling over 2,000 acres was offered to John Bigham for $5 per acre. By 1830, Bigham had formed an agricultural society with four other men and bought 1,500 acres of land. Starting out as a small community of farmers and ranchers, Bigham's colony grew into one of the largest cattle towns in America. After years of growth and development, Bigham died in 1865 at age eighty-six leaving his colony to his two sons who continued to operate it until their father's death in 1887. In 1895, when Texas became an American state, Kyle was established as a county seat. It prohibits towns from having more than twenty residents which has led to some vestiges of isolationism that still exist today among some locals. However, overallKyle has been successful in adapting to its growing population while remaining a largely rural community with strong ties to its farmland and ranching heritage
