Kyle, Texas is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas and has a population of around 147,000 as of 2015. It is the county seat for Hidalgo County and was founded on November 3, 1836 by Captain James Fenton Ballinger and his wife, Nancy A. Ballinger. The first post office in Kyle was established on July 10, 1838. In 1865, General John J. Pershing stopped at the town for supplies on his way to battle Mexico City during the Mexican-American War. Mrs. Pershing's husband gave her their home as a military garrison until he could come back from war with more reinforcements. In 1936, Kyle became an incorporated municipality under the name "Kyle". The city was named after General George Armstrong Custer who fought in World War I and died there in 1919 while deployed to Siberia as part of American Expeditionary Force (AEF). In 1929 Pecos County absorbed Kyle into its jurisdiction; however, Pecos never annexed Kyle again and it reverted to municipality status within Hidalgo County until 1975 when it re-absorbed all municipalities within Hidalgo County save for Kyle itself which retained its own governing body known as "the Mayor."
