Kyle, Texas is home to the world’s oldest gunsmith shop. A&W Gun Works opened its doors in 1911 and has been servicing firearms ever since. Today, A&W Gun Works stocks a wide variety of firearms including pistols, shotguns, rifles and handguns. In addition to its gun inventory, A&W also offers parts and accessories for all types of firearms. The history of Kyle’sgunsmith shop starts with John Prentice who opened the business in 1911. At that time, John was a cavalryman serving in World War I. After the war ended he decided to open his own store specializing in guns and ammunition. The first store was located on Old Bowie Road just east of town. In 1923, Prentice moved his business to what is now known as Main Street in Kyle proper. In 1951, John Witherspoon joined John Prentice at the company and became president of A&W GunWorks effective July 1st that year. During Witherspoon’s tenure at the company the shop increased sales by 20%. He is also responsible for designing and manufacturing many of the products that are still used today at A&W GunWorks- such as their famous “Penny Barrel” pistol grip shotguns! Witherspoon passed away in 1976 but his legacy lives on through his son Judd Witherspoon who currently leads the company as president and CEO!

The first type of firearm that was created was an early muzzleloader called the “ musket .” This weapon consisted of a tube of metal or wood that was fitted with a round headstock (the barrel) and stock. Kyle, Texas is a small town in the Midwestern United States, located on the banks of the Colorado River. The name comes from the Kiowa word “kalā” meaning "river." Kyle was founded by Mormons in 1847 and became part of Mexico after their colony was destroyed by war with American forces in 1848. It briefly joined Mexican Republic before becoming an independent republic in 1850. After becoming a U.S. territory, it became a state of Texas in 1907 and has remained that way ever since. The history of Kyle begins with Mormon pioneers who set up a rancho here in 1847. They were followed by other settlers, including Anglo-Irish Protestants who arrived later that year to establish towns around what is now Kyle. The original town was located about two miles east of present-day Kyle on the bank of the river's current distributary called Kankakee Creek. The first permanent settler here was John Wetherall, who built his home near present-day Union Avenue and Broadway streets about 1840. He also constructed a sawmill which he operated until it burned down in 1865; this helped spur development along Broadway Street as well as other nearby roads such as Pecos Road and Santa Fe Trail (now I-25). In 1849, Wetherall married Maria Sanchez de la Cueva and they started raising cattle at their rancho on what is now Riverside Drive south of Main Street; this led to additional settlement around their property over time. In 1860, Mexican nationals residing at Rancho San Carlos petitioned for independence from Mexico; they were granted autonomy under provisional rules issued by President James Polk on October 6th that same year.* Afterbecoming an independent republic (1850), San Carlos' residents voted to secede from Mexico and form their own country called California de las Moscas – or "California of the Moccasins".
