Kyle, Texas is a town of around 10,000 people located in the Midland Hills area of Bastrop County, Texas. Kyle was founded by Germans in 1881 as a small German community known as Leyden. In 1907, the name was changed to Kyle after the then-Mayor of Bastrop City, John Kyle. The now-defunct Bastrop Electric Cooperative served as the town's first electricity provider from 1907 until it merged with Texaco in 1941. In World War II, Kyle was one of seventeen towns and villages within Bastrop County that were used as bombing ranges for Allied forces during the war. The range opened on July 15th 1944 and operated intermittently until 1945. It was eventually closed due to damage sustained frombombing raids over the years. Today, Kyle is home to a variety of businesses including an auto dealership and gas station. It also has a number of historical buildings and structures dating back to its early days as a settlement. These include many churches which are still standing today (ecclesiastical records survive from at least 1881), some frame homes dating back to before World War I, and even an old post office which still stands today (though it no longer serves postal purposes).

However, around 1970 when deregulation of the energy industry caused prices to drop across most parts of America, production at Kyle's oil fields came to an end. The town slowly shrunk until it only had 584 residents in 2000 when it annexed part of neighboring Hubbard City so that it could have its own police department and fire department
