In 1847, two brothers – George Washington Smith and Elijah Love – discovered oil along with other members of their party at Tellico Pass while exploring for mineral rights near Texarkana (now Amarillo). This event helped spur development around Kingvilley because it demonstrated how easy it would be to find new sources of oil even if no wells had yet been drilled! In 1874, James W. Kingsbury and John C. Hockaday founded Kingsvilley as a small farming community located on land that lay north of Wichita Falls on the banks of the Brazos River*. At this time, there were only about fifty people living in or around Kingvilley*; however*, within just five years*, this population had increased to more than one hundred! By 1910*, when Kingsville became a city%,* many residents had left for better opportunities elsewhere within central Texas**(*although some may have returned during periods such as World War II*)*.
