Kingsville was founded in 1859 by J.D. Stephenson and his brothers, John and James Stephenson. The Stephenson brothers were the first white men to settle in Kingsville and they built the original store and home on the current site of the United States Post Office. The Stephenson brothers also started a cotton gin, which became one of the largest cotton gins in Texas. In 1870, Dr. Elisha Porter bought land at what is now Slaughter Street and built a hospital which served as a local medical center until it closed in 1925. In 1881, Mayor Gentry Fenton erected a free standing statue of General Sam Houston in downtown Kingsville to commemorate Houston's visit to Kingsville that year. The statue is still standing today at Main Street and Slaughter Streets corner with an annual City birthday celebration held every July 4th remembrance marker installed next to it! In 1902, Mr. Wm Hargrave donated land for King's Chapel which became one of the most famous churches in Texas due to its services such as preaching by Methodists Rev. Jno Addison Burchardt (1811-1892) and Revs Wiley Coleman (1846-1925) among others during Reconstruction days when Christianity was almost non-existent following the Civil War. In 1924, Mrs. Lillie Beardsley donated her parcel of land adjacent to King's Chapel for use as a new high school building which would become known as Beardsley High School after Mrs."Lillie" Beardsley who was instrumental in helping start it up from scratch along with her husband Cletus Beardsley Sr., who also played an important role in its early years.. In 1955, Kingsville incorporated as a city under the laws of Texas providing for town hall functions including elections, fire protection and other municipal activities The city has since grown extensively through annexation of surrounding municipalities including Slaughter Heights (1996), Eden Oaks (2002), Spring Branch (2005) & Magnolia Hills (2007). Today there are around 20 businesses located within walking distance of each other within DowntownKingsville limits making it one of THE most vibrant cities you will ever live in!
