Kingsville is a town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo–Fayette City, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. Kingsville is located on the Brazos River and is near its confluence with the Wichita River. Kingsville was founded in 1876 by Englishman John King and Mexican immigrant José María Hidalgo as a trading post on the Wichita River. The name was changed to Kingsville in 1881 after King's father acquired title to land east of present-day Kingsville from General Antonio López de Santa Anna. In 1897, Kingsville became an incorporated municipality when it amalgamated with neighboring Fayette City. In 1909, Kingsville became one of thirteen towns in Johnson County that formed the new Amarillo–Fayette City metropolitan area. In 1971, Kingsville lost its status as an incorporated municipality and reverted back to being a ghost town until it regained its status as an unincorporated community on July 1, 2005. Kingsville was founded by the Hamiltons in 1871. The town was named for General James K. Polk, who served as President of the United States from 1849-1853. The Hamiltons were a farming family from Mobile, Alabama. In 1876, Kingsville became an incorporated town and began to grow rapidly due to its location on the banks of the San Jacinto River. By 1907, the population had reached 1,000 residents and by 1930 it had increased to 4,500 residents. The Depression led to a decline in business activity in Kingsville but it remained an agricultural community until World War II when it became a industrial center with production of munitions and chemical products. During World War II, Kingsville played a significant role in producing Allied forces during the war effort by providing employment for local citizens and manufacturing goods such as ammunition and vehicles. After the war, Kingvillians continued their success in economy through a variety of businesses including retailing, insurance sales, real estate development and agriculture until they lost their status as an agricultural community after 2000. However, some remnants of this culture still remain today such as Hamiltons descendants living in Kingsville and participating in local events
Kingsville is a small town in Anderson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,078 at the 2010 census. Kingsville was founded in 1871 by John H. Kingsbury and named for him. It was laid out on the banks of the Red River by J.P. Goodrich and Wm. Fenton as a planned town to be called "Kingsville Landing." In 1876, the town was abandoned due to flooding from the nearby forks of the Red River which had been created by upstream construction of the San Antonio& Houston Railway (later known asthe American National Railway). The towns first post office opened in 1881 and continued operations until it closed in 1888. The community's first school opened on December 12, 1881, with Mr. Pemberton teaching grades one through twelve; it remained in operation until 1906 when it became an independent high school District 2A school serving Kingsville and neighboring communities including Westover Hills and Springdale under its current name (now Hillcrest Independent School District 2A). A second high school building was built in 1911 but it burned down within weeks; this also served as the final straw for closure of Kingsville's educational institutions. Kingsville experienced some growth during World War II due to wartime production requirements for munitions plants located nearby such as Tivoli Arsenal; however, no significant development occurred after 1945 aside from occasional visits from military families which remains today a local history attraction for visitors to check out exhibits about Kingvillians' wartime experiences at various locations throughout Anderson County (e.g., Tivoli Arsenal Museum). In recent years there has been much talk about reviving downtown kingsville which has seen some redevelopment over time including new restaurants and retail space along Main Street while still preserving many historic buildings including old courthouse Annex/ jail cells that serve today as part of Anderson County museum complex providing more than just historical interest but also functional use as housing unitsote(s)
