In Kingsville, Texas, the first firearms were manufactured in 1876. The town was founded by Judge James P. Kingsbury and his brother, Sam Kingsbury. In 1877, Kingbury donated two shotguns to the town’s police department. These handguns were used in the early years of the town’s existence as weapons for self-defense only. Kingville was one of many towns in what is now southern Texas that became gun-friendly due to legislation passed by Governor George W. Bush following Columbine High School shootings in Colorado in 1999 (see Gun Owner Protection Act of 1998). The store was opened by John and Lillie King in 1848 as a small general store. They continued to operate the business until their death in 1925. The store became a local landmark because it sold guns and ammunition for the townspeople. It also served as a social center for the community. In 1951, the Kingsville Gun Parts store became part of Sam’s Club and changed its name to Sam’s Arsenal Sporting Goods Store. It became a city in 1907 and a town in 1924. Kingsville is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. Kingsville was once known as "The Settlement." The first permanent settler arrived in 1885, when J.D. Fulghum and Peculiar Ellis came from Georgia to homestead near the current location of Kingsville. They named their new community after then-kingdom of England, which they had just discovered after crossing the Chunnel into France on their way home from exploring Canada's Rocky Mountains. During the early years of Kingsville's existence, it relied heavily on subsistence farming methods and other means to survive; however, with the arrival of railroads in 1907, industry soon took hold andKingsvilley prospered as one of Hudspeth County's leading towns - becoming both an important agricultural center and a key staging ground for Commerce Street oil production until that industry peaked in the late 1940s/early 1950s.. In 1924, due to annexation by Round Rock (later Austin), Kingsville became an autonomous city under its own government - making it one of only two cities within Hudspeth County that did not become part of either county’s primary jurisdiction during its formation; this unique arrangement continued until 1971 when all but three Hudspeth Counties were consolidated into Austin-Round Rock . In 1940, Kingsville became a city with a population of 4,009. It has since shrunk to 1,993 residents and has no public services other than its own police department and fire department. Kingsville is located on the banks of the Trinity River adjacent to Arlington County and Dallas County. It is bordered by Arlington on the north side and Irvington on the south side. The community sits around two large reservoirs which provide drinking water for most of southern Dallas as well as parts of northern Arlington County. A few businesses are located near Interstate 5: North Star Auto Parts on Kirby Drive in Irvington; Kelly's Pharmacy across from I-5 exit 21A in south Arlington; and Kmart across from US 290 exit 152 in east Arlington
