Kingsville is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,951 at the 2010 census. Kingsville is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. Kingsville was founded in 1881 by Colonel John H. King and his wife Lydia Clements as a white settlement on the Llano River within present-day Austin, then part of Mexican territory. In 1905, when it became Hudspeth County's capital, Kingsville was renamed for General Sam Houston—an event that also marked the start of what would become one of Texas' most successful independent governments. As an agricultural center, Kingsville produced cotton and corn until recent years; however, its primary industries have included energy production and manufacturing now largely associated with Round Rock/Austin suburbs such as Kyle and Cedar Park. In 1932 local farmers formed the Citizens' Committee on Conservation to promote sustainable farming practices in one of Texas' earliest organic communities; they remain today as Friends of Farmers & Gardeners (F&G). A few years later legislation creating the municipal government moved from Austin to Hudspeth County; though some agencies—including fire protection and public works—remained at City Hall until recently, other services have been transferred to Kingsville essentially unchanged since its incorporation date (1936).
