Kingsville was founded by the Stephens brothers in 1881 as a cotton plantation community on what is now Route 183 south of Austin. The town got its name from King George IV of England who visited the area in 1881 and named it after his father-in-law, James K. Polk Sr., then governor of Texas. In 1907, Kingsville became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and nine trustees governing its affairs through a three-member board of commissioners elected at large. In 1951, Kingsville accepted annexation by Austin; this made it one of the last towns to be annexed into city limits in Travis County. Kingsville experienced some growth during the late 20th century due to oil Refining and Processing operations located there such as Shell Oil Company and Texaco (later Chevron). However since the early 2000s when shale gas extraction began taking hold in nearby counties oil production has been declining which has had an impact on local economic development and infrastructure needs

Kingsville, Texas was founded in 1879 by General John H. Richardson. The town was named for the then-recently arrived Spanish colonists who named it San Antonio de Kingsville after their king, Don Fernando de la Madrid y Costilla. From its beginnings, Kingsville was a small farming community with a population of about 100 people. It grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s as agricultural production increased in the area and new businesses were established in the town. In 1901, Kingsville became an incorporated municipality and began to develop into a major cultural and commercial center within East Texas. By 1960, the town had reached its peak population with over 1,500 residents. However, economic decline led to gradual decrease in population until it peaked at around 200 residents in 2000. In recent years,Kingsville has seen modest growth as it becomes increasingly reliant on outside sources of funding for both municipal services and economic development initiatives. While some aspects of its historic culture have held up well (such as its strong historical ties to agriculture), others have been struggling (most notably the lack of significant private sector investment). Nevertheless, Kingsville remains an important community within East Texas and is home to many popular tourist attractions such as the Kingsville Museum & Art Gallery and Old Time Faireground amusement park
