Killeen is a small town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the El Paso–New Mexico–El Paso Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community began as a farming settlement in 1867 when David Killeen and his family settled on Rancho Monterrey south of the present-day town area. In 1875, Killeen's brother-in-law, James Pritchett, donated to the community land east of downtown for public square and schoolhouse. In 1886, Killeen organized the first agricultural fair in what is now El Paso County. In 1925, Killeen became one of two communities located within Hidalgo County limits to establish themselves as municipalities separate from county government. With its own Parks and Recreations Department and police force, Killeen soon emerged as a popular tourist destination for residents throughout western Hidalgo County. In 1984, following passage of the Community Development Financial Institutions Reform Act (CDFIA), which aimed to increase access to credit by low-income residents, Killeen established itself as an educational hub with several postsecondary institutions including Texas Tech University and New Mexico Highlands University. In addition to traditional education opportunities such as high school diploma/GED programs and technical schools; nearby villages had started offering alternative education such as adult Basic Education Classes (ABEC) degrees or trade/vocational training courses for those unable or unwilling to attend traditional universities or colleges.
