Killeen is a city in Texas, United States. The population was 96,893 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hidalgo County. Killeen is located in the Midwestern United States and straddles both sides of the Rio Grande River. The first permanent European settlers in what would become Killeen were Frenchmen who arrived in 1736 during the Louisiana Purchase from Spain. They named their new settlement after Saint-Louis, France. The name changed to Killeen after they lost their land to Indian attackers in 1802. A post office was established at present-day Killeen on March 6, 1835, and it remained operational until it closed on December 16, 1903. In 1845, cattle rustlers killed six men near present day Lubbock while driving their animals through a Mexican section of Bexar County; this event led to the founding of Lubbock by Texans who desired revenge for this frontier massacre. On November 3, 1850, Killeen became an independent municipality when it split from Bexar County and joined with Nueces County as part of a larger territorial unit known as Amarillo Territory which included all of Texas east of the Red River (northwest including Oklahoma). In 1896–97 local citizens organized a strike againstlectrification rates set by electric companies within town limits which resulted in widespread electrical blackout throughout much of Amarillo that disrupted daily life for several days especially among small farmers and merchants whose crops had been ruined by darkness caused by power outages caused by electric companies rather than natural disasters such as floods or Tornadoes like those that struck other parts of Texas two years earlier that year killing over 200 people along with scores more injured or homeless creating extensive damage across rural areas particularly southeastern Amarillo where most residents lived before industry replaced farming as their primary source of income providing jobs for hundreds if not thousands people outside town limits contributing significantly to overall economic development prior to World War I followed later By 1920s prices for electricity had decreased making agricultural production less important compared to manufacturing growth outside town limits alternate employment opportunities leading some residents back inside townlimits but many others continued lifestyles outside walls hoping things would improve
