Killeen, Texas is a small town located in the Houston metropolitan area. The population was 8,815 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Harris County, Texas region. Killeen has been inhabited by Native Americans for over three thousand years and was founded in 1836 by Captain James Hogg and his party as Fort Hope. The town served as a military base during the Mexican-American War and became known for its hot springs. In 1907, Killeen was incorporated as a city and it remained an unincorporated community until it received city status in 1965. As a result of its diverse history and strong economy, Killeen has become one of America's most ethnically diverse cities. However, the town's growth stopped abruptly after the war ended and there were no new developments until the late 1960s when a small shopping center was built on what is now downtown Killeen. Since then, Killeen has experienced continued growth with a population of over 10,000 people today.
