Killeen, Texas is a city in Archer County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,764 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Archer County. Killeen is located in the Mid-American region and lies at an elevation of 527 feet (155 m). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.8 square miles (21 km²), all of it land. The first settlement in what would become Killeen was made on November 8, 1836 by three men from Fort Worth led by Capt. John Hancey and Lt. James Biddle: Hancey and Biddle were members of a group that had come overland from Missouri after seeking refuge from Mexico's war for independence against Spain. They camped near present-day Waterloo Road on what is now called Broadway Street before starting their own town under the name "Hanceville." It appears as if Hancey named his new village after himself - Killeen may have been derived from his initial name or something he said while naming his town site - but no evidence suggests this was actually true. | In 1837 Major General J F Rankin abandoned Dallas during its siege by Mexican forces under Santa Anna and set out for San Antonio with 1,500 soldiers to help relieve Dallas; when he reached Austin he discovered that more troops were needed so he ordered Price to move his headquarters eastward into Travis County where he found local militia Captain Nicholas Boone to command an outpost at Rockwall which served as interim headquarters until Price's arrival in 1839 In 1840s two other towns were founded around Archers Creek: one by John Witherspoon (later known as White Settlement) on what would become Slaughter Lane north of Slaughter Road and another by Ira Cook on what became Elmendorf Drive southeast of Main Street just south of US Highway 290 today known as FM 1172 . These settlements remained inactive until1849 when several families moved there including James Mclntyre who built McLeod House which still stands today next door to Baylor University’s campus | In 1852 Stephen Fenton decided to move his business operations from Wichita Falls, TX back into Archer County because he felt that Arrowhead Mills would be too close to Houston for competition The first post office opened in Killeen on December 12th, 1861 On July 4th 1902 Enterprise Manufacturing Company established a plant here churning out coffee beans called Enterprise Roasters On October 17th 1907 Standard Oil organized its first holding company here with $2 million worth of assets including 25% interest in Enterprise Roasters | By 1930 Enterprise Manufacturing Company's plant employed 2200 people making coffee beans valued at $105 million On February 21st 1935 Standard Oil announced it was going out Of Business And Closure Here At Enterprise Manufacturing Company As A ResultOfWorld War II We lost our only major customer

Over time, Killeen has become a vibrant cultural and economic center for the region. Today, Killeen is an important community with active businesses and lively nightlife. The city is also home to a number of historical landmarks - such as the State Capitol and Kilroy's BBQ - that are rich in history and culture.
Killeen was founded in 1874 by Johnnie Killeen and his wife Anna. The town was named for him because he had killed a buffalo with a rifle while hunting in the area. In 1875, the Killeens built their first home on the current site of their current business park. The family continued to live in the home until 1925 when they moved to their present location. In 1929, Killeen became an independent city and adopted its seal - an olive branch topped with a feather - as its symbol. On January 14, 1932, Killeen incorporated as a city under the laws of Texas. As an independent city, it enjoyed many benefits such as tax breaks and freee public transportation. On October 15, 1951, City Council voted 3-2 to annex neighboring unincorporated areas (the rural areas around Killeens businesses) into the city limits; this annexation created what is now known as "The Loop."
