The name "Killeen" comes from the Kiowa word "kile," meaning "a place to sleep." In 1867, when General Sam Houston's army invaded Mexico, he stopped at Cline Creek and ordered his troops to rest there before moving on to other parts of the country. This event is commemorated by a plaque on the courthouse building in Killeen that reads: "Herein rested soldiers who fought against Mexico." In 1883, Waddell Dodds built his first cotton gin in what is now downtown Killeen. He became one of America's leading cotton producers and organized two slave drives that freed more than 150 slaves in Texas during this time period. Dodds was also an early investor in oil wells in southeastern Oklahoma and played an important role in developing those regions into major petroleum production centers during the 20th century. There are several interesting historical landmarks located within walking distance of downtown Killeen including examples of post-Civil War architecture such as Humble Oil Refinery No. 2 (1896), brick buildings associated with Main Street School (1901), Bank Building (1910), First National Bank & Trust Company (1920), and Pembina Building (1924). Other significant attractions include Fort Worth State Park which offers beautiful views over Cline Creek Valley; Christmastime markets held every week at various local businesses; annual rodeo events at Round Rock Municipal Events Center; nationally televised college football games played at Cowboys Stadium; numerous golf tournaments hosted annually by various businesses throughout town; as well as dozens of smaller shops and restaurants across town that offer uniquelectic foods and drinks unique to each particular location or occasion.

Despite its success during the American Civil War, handguns were not popular among the common people because they were too expensive and complicated to produce and maintain compared to rifle ammunition. Consequently, George Peacock developed his Peacock Revolver which used an action similar to that of modern pistols but consisted of two guns linked together by an adjustable bandolier strap (a type of trigger guard). This weapon fired a 7mm bullet at around 350 fps which caused significant damage at long range due to its low recoil. On July 4th 1861, both sides began firing into each other’s cities from cannons located on Wall Street in New York City; this event is considered to be the beginning of Modern Warfare® video game series
