Killeen is a small town located in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,372 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. Killeen was founded in 1884 by Captain John H. Kilpatrick and his wife Anna White as a trading post on the Santa Fe Trail. Killeen's growth came from its location on the banks of Buffalo Bayou and its proximity to railways that transported goods to and from Mexico City and other parts of America. In 1915, local citizens voted to change the name to "Killeen" after World War I veteran General John Foyle Kilpatrick, who had fought in Spain and Germany. The town developed into a manufacturing center during the 1920s with businesses such as Waco-based Texaco Inc., Alcoa Alloy Works, Texas Instruments Co., Pabst Brewing Company, Gulfstream Airlines and Seagram Spirits Manufacturing Company among others locating there. However, by 1941 most of those businesses were gone due to wartime production restrictions placed upon them by America's allies. However, Killeen did not suffer economically because it was still an agricultural community until after World War II when industry returned with a vengeance thanks to innovations brought over from abroad such as mass production methods for automobiles and aircraft manufacturers using Korean aluminum foundries while also establishing itself as one of the leading corn producers in Texas. In 1960, Killeen became home to then UOP (now UTXO) corporate headquarters before becoming a technology hub following their acquisition of IBM Corporation's PC division in 1984 which helped start what is now known as "Texas Silicon Valley." Other major companies that have either headquartered or employed employees here include Sun Microsystems Inc., Phillips 66 Refining & Marketing Co., Dell Computer Corp., Intel Capital Management LLC and many more since 1990 including numerous tech startups like Appcelerator TX (later acquired by Facebook), Glennan Ventures LLC ( later sold to Google), EPFL (later acquired by Swiss pharmaceutical giant Novartis AG ) along with dozens of other high-tech companies that have made Killeen their home over the years including some currently being absorbed into larger firms like Apple Incorporated or Microsoft Corporation - making it one of the top technology shopping destinations in North Texas! Today Killeen remains an important working community with strong ties to its local economy but also enjoys access to world-class amenities such as schools and parks dotting its otherwise rural landscape complete with Barton Springs Lake which offers views of downtown Austin below while also providing fishing opportunities for all ages; attractions like Six Flags Over Texas which are minutes away while also having easy access to Interstate 35E for conveniences like shopping malls nearby; residential neighborhoods like Willowbrook Village located just east off IH 10 Exit 249 off FM 620; west side annexed into neighboring Round Rock suburb called Highland Park while elsewhere there are several villages/towns surrounding larger cities such as Houston or Dallas – making it quite an interesting mix!
