In 1912 Fort Worth annexed Killeen into its city limits; however, the town continued to operate independently until 1965 when it merged with nearby Arlington Heights into one municipality under the name Arlington Heights-Killeen (AIK). On October 1st 1889 Charles Goodyear leased 5 square miles (12 km²) from Ector County for $1 per year with no hope of selling any property back again soon enough so that he might purchase more land at a future date; Goodyear had just developed his famous rubber tire company in Akron Ohio and needed fresh land to expand production facilities onto which could be attached his new company’s warehouse buildings which would house his inventory and annual sales data collection equipment used by rubber tappers all across America! This unique development opportunity offered good economic prospects but also great racial segregation as white men only could own contiguous parcels within their respective county while black men were limited to uncut strips outside those boundaries!
