Killeen is a city in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 721 at the 2010 census. The Killeen community began to form in the early 1800s when settlers from Kentucky and Tennessee arrived in what is now Tarrant County. Today, Killeen is considered a center of commerce and culture for the area around it. It has been called "the cultural capital of Texas." The Killeen Post Office opened on May 1, 1876, and closed on November 30, 1957. The first postmaster was Mrs. C M Haldeman. Killeen's rich history can be traced back to the early 1800s when settlers from Kentucky and Tennessee arrived in what is now Tarrant County. In 1836, James Fenton established an agricultural outpost called Horse Branch near present-day Killeen. By 1840, Fenton had founded a small town named Kilpatrick about 12 miles (19 km) northwest of present-day Killeen. That same year, John Bigham established a small ranch north of present-day Kilpatrick and east of today's Gaylord Road/I-635 exit known as Bigham Ranch No 2 (later renamed Gaylord). From this location, Bigham developed one of the most important ranches in northeast Texas: Cowan’s Creek Ranch which stretched across portions of southeast Austin and west Fort Worth before becoming part of Vernon Plantation after boundary changes during the Mexican–American War. A decade later in 1846 Jno Fenton sold his holdings to David Coody who reorganized them as First National Bank & Trust Company with branches at bothexport centers – Fort Worth (now Arlington) and Houston – marking Dallas’ first commercial enterprise outside that city limits In 1849 Jno Fenton married Anna Beardsley who became mother to two young daughters before she died March 4th following giving birth to another daughter six weeks premature due to complications from placenta previa – stillbirth specialist Dr David Beardsley performed her autopsy which showed intrauterine life support failed prior to delivery . Anna had alsoizerd three cds by Dr George WOODS just southwest of Georgetown then Carthage on IH 35W five miles west off US 290 until its merger into Texaco Incorporated effective Mar 9th 1950 between then 400 acre tract purchased by Lubbock Oil Co., current day White Sands Missile Range land owned by TX Army Corps OF Engineers Following consolidation all banks were moved underground including Ft Worth American Express building was destroyed by fire Aug 1951 burning over 3 days records lost but some insurance claims paid $500k loss on property damage only less than 1%oft total amount claimed for fire On Dec 6th 1951 Unocal Petroleum Corporation leased #8b Lavaca Street NW corner Ave SETexaco Incorporated Jan 1948 company name changed April 17th 1954 Texaco Corp purchased by Mobil Oil Corporation Separate becomes Mobil General Service Company AGCO Products Division Based out #4 University PlazaDallas TX Became ExxonMobil Corp Feb 15 1976

Its many architectural features include the main courthouse building (built in 1896), several churches and chapels, as well as dozens of homes and businesses dating back to before World War II. There are also several commercial districts including First National Bank Park which offers visitors a variety of activities such as fishing, hiking, swimming, etc., while Second Ave./Highland Mall provides shoppers with a wide range of retailers including clothing stores, antique stores, etc.
Killeen was founded in 1836 by John Killeen and his wife, Catharine. The area that is now Killeen was part of the San Antonio Missions District. In 1837, the Killeens moved to what is now Wichita Falls, Texas. In 1847, they founded a town called Pleasantville in present day Tyler County, Texas. On May 17, 1840, the Mexican-American War began when General Antonio López de Santa Anna attacked Pemberton's Battalion of United States Volunteers at the Battle of Nacogdoches. John Killeen and 15 other men were killed in action and their families were Propertyless Mexicans who had nothing to do with Mexican-American War or America's victory over Mexico. In 1865, as American troops were withdrawing from TX after the American Civil War ended, they burned all of Pleasantville down because it had been held up as a Confederate stronghold during the war years.
