In 1916, the Texas Legislature renamed it for General John F. Kennedy after he was assassinated in Dallas. Killeen is located on the Red River near Corpus Christi. It is the seat of Austin County and has a population of over 116,000 people as of 2010. In 1836, General James Killeen led an army against Mexican forces during the Battle of San Jacinto. He was killed in the engagement and his unit became known as "Theggies." One year later, Killeen's widow established a post office in her husband's name at what is now called "Killeen." The first postmaster general was Mr. Abertis, who served from 1840 to 1846. From 1851 to 1861, Major Wm Hogg served as postmaster general; he also served as mayor from 1860 to1868 and from 1870 to 1872. In 1916, Governor Jock Mahlon designated Killeen as the temporary capital of Texas when Austin moved from its original location south of Round Rock to its current site east of Travis County due to growth around it (although Austin continued to exist until Hurricane Rita obliterated most buildings within downtown). On October 15, 1916 – one day after Attorney-General Clyde Toland announced that Texas would become an all-white state – Killeen’s citizens responded with enthusiastic rejoicing by erecting a white Stars & Stripes flag flying above City Hall while they raised their own black stars and stripes flag atop City Hall Annexe (now home to UTAustin).
