In 1925, construction began on what would become known as Sam Houston State University's Main Campus in downtown Killeen; it opened in 1927 with 119 buildings and more than 1,000 students divided among 10 faculties including agriculture (forerunner to UTSA), law (UTD), medicine (MD Anderson), engineering (USC/Texas A&M Corps College), business administration (UTEP/Johns Hopkins University), education (UTSA/Houston Baptist University), dentistry (Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary/Dallas) and women's studies (Lafayette College). TodaySam Houston StateUniversity Main Campus consists of 614 buildings spread over 5 square miles with some buildings dating back to 1926! In 2013 Sam Houston State Univ announced plans for an additional 200 acres near Interstate 35W which will house their new School Of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences
