In 1949, Killeen was renamed after Lieutenant Colonel James A. "Jimmy" Willcox who died while leading a military parade through town on Veteran's Day. The University of Texas at Austin relocated its campus from downtown Austin to what is now Goodyear Ballpark in 1961 and Killeen quickly became one of its most popular destinations for students and residents alike due to its close proximity to UTAustin and easy access to shopping and dining opportunities. In 1911, an electric company organized a line to supply electricity to the community which led to the construction of a grandstand that remains standing today across from First Baptist Church. In 1925, Second Baptist Church replaced First Baptist as the town's main church. In 1952–1953 a tornado touched down near Killeen and destroyed much of what remained of downtown; however most damage occurred outside of the city limits due to mobile homes and other debris lodged within buildings demolished by windstorms during those years In 2006–2007 Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans leaving many people displaced; some who left their homes decided to move back into their former neighborhoods while others relocated away from Louisiana altogether On September 16th 2007 there were large protests taking place throughout America against George W Bush's presidency following Hurricane Katrina KILLEEN HISTORY: Edwin C Kileen settled here on November 5th1876 with his wife Anna Maria Gonzales when he discovered landlicense #1 for what would become known as "the City of Kiilien". He & Wife started building cabins & stores out side their home until they had 4 buildings done before moving into this current Location 1st Baptist Church Site became available April 9th 1888 Chiefs Fought IndiansApril 24th 1865 Kiilien falls under Mexican rule May 15th 1861 US Civil War begins July 12nd 1861 Texas Confederation Treaty Capitulates October 15th 1861 Kiilien becomes part of Texas
The Killeen, Texas area was first settled in 1827 by Scots-Irish immigrants. The town Takoma was founded in 1829 and became the county seat of Killeen County. In the 1840s, the Mexican–American War led to a significant population growth in the region. The railroad arrived in 1886 and made Killeen an important commercial center. The post office moved from Takoma to Killeen in 1907. In 1950, the Ku Klux Klan moved to Killeen from nearby Wichita Falls, Texas after getting approval from local officials
