Killeen is a small town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The name Killeen originates from the Kiowa word "kili", meaning "to call". The first settler in what became Killeen was George Hargrave who arrived in 1827. By 1870, over 50 homes had been built and by 1912, Killeen had a population of 2,500. A post office called Killetown was established in 1881, and remained in operation until it closed in 1966. The local school district has been operated since 1907 when Lubbock School District #1 merged with Killeen ISD to form Tarrant County Independent School District #2 (now Tarrant County Public Schools). In 1924, Killetown Elementary School moved to its current location on FM 2029 across the street from Killetown High School; it continued to serve as an elementary school until 2002 when it became Killetown Middle School. According to the 2000 US Census there were 1,624 people living in Killeen households; 734 lived within urban boundaries and 694 within rural boundaries which made up 3% of the total population. Ethnicity breakdown according to race/ethnicity: White (77%), Black or African American (10%), Hispanic (5%), Asian/Pacific Islander (4%). According to 2006 US Census figures there are now 923 residents living inside city limits only while 811 residents live outside city limits including 513 individuals who reside inside of downtown Killeen limits only and 457 individuals who reside outside any municipality boundaries including 281 individuals who reside inside of downtown DFWlimits only however these include all citizens currently registered with DPS prior to September 1st 2006 . As much as 69% percent of all DPSregistered citizens resided within municipalties borders or inner city limits making this an extremely diverse community for law enforcement purposes

Killeen is a city in the U.S. state of Texas, located in the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The population was 636 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area and is included in theTX/AR/OK Combined Statistical Area. Killeen was founded on December 12, 1881 by J.D. Payne as a cattle ranch and community on what is now FM 19604 east of I-35 near present day Slaughter Lane and FM 620 south of US 287 (now US 183). In 1893 it became a town with a post office and school district, which also included Slaughter Lane to its east and FM 19604 to its west. After annexation by Arlington County in 1907, Killeen became an independent municipality with its own police department until 1959 when it merged into Arlington County's larger city government under then Mayor John Connally Sr.. In 1980s Killeen experienced growth due to advances in technology such as internetworking which allowed for increased trade between counties within Arlington County including Bexar County to take place through online auctions which drew people from all over Texas and beyond to visit these new towns along I-35 becoming known as "The InternetTowns." A number of high tech companies such as Dell, Intel and AMD were established in this era including: Compuware Corporation (later Microsoft), Arco Industries Inc., IBM PC compatibles company Ingram Micro AG (later Infineon Technologies) – whose CEO would later become chairman of Time Warner Entertainment Company – Texas Instruments Corporation’s bipolar semiconductor division Micrel Inc., Cray Research Laboratories – home of global leader Vectoray ICANN operated research center - American Express Travelers Insurance Company (AETC) headquartered there from their original location at 4005 Neches Road before moving back to their original building at 5500 East Livingston Street after World War II before eventually expanding again across both streets into what is now known as Industry Place Mall annexing several smaller stores originally built there during the early years following World War II like H&R Block & Coopers dealership etcetera eventually forming what we know today at two main malls one downtown called “Old Town” while another more recent name given it by developers later called “Industry Place Mall” that includes some largeanchored stores along I-35 such as Sears Tower etcetera finally anchored around that central intersection providing much needed retail space for residents throughout Downtown Killeen today having seen significant renovation & redevelopment over time including mixed use development on most parts downtown mixed with residential units on older blocks off main intersections arterial streets surrounding it making Killeen one major urban area currently undergoing significant redevelopment throughout Travis County comprising much suburban land located just outside of Downtown Austin
