In Killeen, Texas, the first firearms were brought in by settlers in 1837. The town was founded on a ranch that had been purchased from the Kiowa Apache tribe. In 1848, about 100 people lived in Killeen and it began to grow rapidly due to its location and access to natural resources. By 1870, Killeen had a population of 1,200 and it had become a main center for commerce and agriculture. The city developed into an important cultural hub during the early 20th century. The city hosted the first international exposition in America in 1915 and also became home to the Trinity University School of Engineering.

The town was founded in 1879 by John Killeen, who homesteaded land near the present-day intersection of FM 527 and US 281. In 1907, Killeen donated land to the University of Texas at Austin for use as a research center. Today, Killeen is home to several businesses, including an insurance company and a grocery store. The name "Killeen" comes from local legend which tells of two brothers who were robbers during the early 1800s. One brother was called "King Killeen" while the other was known as "Red King". Legend says that when one brother was caught, he cried out "I'm not king anymore! I'm just King Red." This inspired John Killeen to name his community after himself - King's Landing in Scotland would have been too confusing for locals). Killeen began as a farming community with only about seventy residents in 1907. By 1920, the population had grown to 1,500 people and by 1930 it had reached 2,000 people. At this point development began along FM 527 which became known as Main Street because most business activity took place on that stretch of road. The original church still stands today and is used primarily for religious services. In 1951 Killeens first school opened its doors; it was soon followed by another school building in 1957 and finally a library in 1971. Today there are six schools within walking distance of downtown Killeen - three elementary schools (Piney Creek Elementary School; Eastside Elementary School), one middle school (Central High School), and one high school (University High School). In recent years there have been several controversial decisions made by the Town Council regarding issues such as fracking (a process involved injecting water vapor into shale formations under Texas) or zoning changes that would allow more commercial development within town limits without following through with required permits from the State government. Despite these controversies local residents continue to live their lives peacefully despite difficult times

The town of Killeen, Texas was founded in 1854 by Capt. James W. Kelsey and his family. The town grew rapidly due to the discovery of oil fields in nearby Winkler County, and by 1864 Killeen had a population of over 1,500 people. In 1865, the city of Killeen was incorporated as a separate municipality, and the name of the town changed to Austin in honor of Ulysses S. Grant, the first U.S. president born in Texas. The city also became known for its cotton plantations and for manufacturing goods such as meatpacking products and railroad cars. In 1929, Austin became the capital of Texas; Killeen continued to serve as its municipal court house until 1935.
