One of these men, James Killeen, helped found Killeen in 1854. At first, the village consisted only of a few homes and a schoolhouse. Over time, Killeen grew into an important cultural center for southwestern Texas due to its location close to Austin and its vibrant community spirit. In 1953, it became one of the first towns in Texas to have television service when TVs were installed in all local businesses. Over time, Killeen also became known for its annual Oktoberfest celebrations which are now considered a national event across Texas.
Killeen was founded in 1879 by Scotsman John Killeen and his wife Ann. The town, located about 25 miles northeast of Dallas, became an agricultural center during the early 1800s with land still being surveyed and sold after the Big Bend Railroad was completed in 1881. In 1898, Killeen's first post office opened. By 1907, the population had reached 100 residents. During World War II, Killeen served as a military base for aircraft production at nearby Dallas-Fort Worth Airport. After the war, the town grew rapidly with businesses such as Pohl's Hardware becoming active. In 1978, Killeen designated itself an independent city and began to develop its downtown area. A new public library was built in 1995 and renamed the University of Texas at Killeen Library in honor of Dr. Laura Ellington who donated money for its construction. In September 2006, Killeen voters approved a Measure 2 which will fund rebuilding and Renovation of Streets within their city limits which is expected to impact street closures that may occur due to expansion of future development projects within city boundaries
