Killeen, Texas is a small town located in the far southwest corner of Texas. The population was 5,865 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Schleicher County and has a K-9 unit that patrols its streets. The name "Killeen" comes from two words: Kilpatrick and h-a-l-e-n. The first word means "settlement." The second word means "battle ground." This settlement was founded by pioneers in 1836. They named it after General Sam Houston's brother, James Kilpatrick. Killeen grew rapidly during the 1800s because of its importance as a center for cattle ranching and shipping. In 1907, Killeen became an independent city and retains that status to this day. The community was originally founded on land that now makes up part of Austin County. On December 20th, 1836, John Hennepin reported seeing three mules killed when he drove them off the Old Santa Fe Trail near present day McKinney (now Midtown). Captain David Crouch decided to build a log cabin on what would become Killeen given its location away from danger and good grazing land for his cattle. He named his new settlement 'Hennepin's Settlement'. A post office called Hennepin's Settlement was established in 1839; it changed its name to 'Kilpatrick's Settlement' in 1845 after General Sam Houston's brother James Kilpatrick became an associate justice on the United States Supreme Court. From 1840 until 1876, there were six mail carriers serving Killeen with mail delivered twice weekly between Austin and Dallas using stagecoaches known as 'the White Ox'. In 1901–1902, local citizens built a brick courthouse which still stands today within walking distance of all businesses in town today including their bank (the First National Bank), barbershop (Hailey Barber & Co.), grocery store (Grocery Outlet), high school (Lincoln High School), post office (The Post Office) - making it one of only 2 permanent buildings in town remaining from those days! In 1916 – 1918 building construction stopped due to World War I; however due to generous donations by members of the community, Two new buildings were erected at no cost – one across Main Street from current day Hailey Barber & Co., which still stands today next door to Our Lady Of Perpetual Help Elementary School; while another building was added along Trinity Avenue – also known as Main Street South – just south of Present Day Starbucks! After World War II ended, most activity returned to normal; however some businesses closed during economic downturns such as 2008 when numerous stores closed including Macy's Department Store locate across Interstate 35W from downtown Killeen; followed by Sears Holdings Corporation closing their doors less than 1 year later across I-35W just west of downtown Fort Worth! However recent additions include additional restaurants such as JJB’s Pizza(new since 2016)and Chinese restaurant Panda Express opposite Starbucks! Downtown business owners are currently working hard redeveloping vacant properties into mixed use/residential/commercial spaces which will create even more jobs for locals who continue living & working here!
