Killeen, Texas is an unincorporated community and census-designated place located in Abilene County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in what is now Killeen was a man named John Hance who came to the area in 1876. He built a cabin on what is now FM 756. At that time it was part of San Antonio County. A post office called Killeen was established in 1877, and continued until it were discontinued in 1902. A school for boys was Built here about 1880 by Methodist Episcopalians under the direction of Reverend Denton Waddell and James Waddell; during its years of operation only 10 students showed up for Classes each term; but as soon as enough men volunteered to take care of it the School became successful and continued attend ing until 1902 when it moved to new quarters on White Sands Drive adjoining White Sands Park which still remains today as a memorial to this pioneer school institution In 1906 Mrs. Ira Janssenson made an unsuccessful bid for election as Mayor of Abilene against Lamar Alexander but her husband Bob did not run because he felt he could not win without voting rights

The city also sponsors numerous cultural events throughout the year that include arts & crafts shows at various galleries, art exhibitions at local museums, rodeo competitions/events at Steele Events Center (formerly Kansas Speedway), golf tournaments at White Sands Golf Course (formerly Houston Country Club), and country music concerts featuring popular Western artists at Hobby Lobby Pavilion on State Highway 290 outside of downtown Killeen.
