Killeen is a small town located in Denton County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Killeen was founded in 1879 by Scots-Irish immigrants from County Roscommon as a logging and farming community. The original name of the town was "The Gap." The first post office in Killeen was established on October 12, 1879, and operated under the name of "The Gap." A new post office building was built in 1916 and served as the town's central business district until it burned down in 1951. The old post office building remains standing today and is used as a museum. Killeen has been home to numerous businesses over its history including Pecos Textile Mills which were founded in 1901; Jardine Rubber Company which manufactured tires from 1912 to 1945; First National Bank (now Wells Fargo) which opened its doors on November 15, 1907; and Texaco Inc., now ChevronTexaco Chemical Co., which began operations at Killeen on December 3, 1936. In 1952, Killeen became one of five towns within Denton County to be designated an ' urban center.' That same year saw the opening of Killeen Municipal Airport after years of planning by local officials. In 1966, Killeen became an independent city with its own government while still sharing services with Denton County through annexation ceremonies that took place throughout the countywide process known as annexation dance. In 1984, IHOP opened their restaurant inside what is now Children's Museum of America - one of just a few restaurants ever licensed for use indoors by an American city or county government during that period. In 1990s oil refineries closed within Denton County making energy production difficult for many residents but not for KLTE Broadcasting Corporation who converted their facility into KLTE-AM/FM broadcasting starting February 1st 1994 simulcasting KLTE-TV out there on channel 830 kHz originally granted to them by then Mayor Donny Hathaway . They've been doing this since day one!KRZE - also started February 1st 1994 playing country music live day & night 7 days a week 50 hours straightnonstop all thruout Greater Houston!!!
