Kilgore, Texas is a small town located in Kerr County, Texas. The population was 2,611 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat for Kerr County. Kilgore is one of four towns in Kerr County and is surrounded by rural areas with rolling hills and farms. The other three towns are Midway, Rockslide, and Pecan Grove. The first settler in what is now Kilgore was James Gist who arrived there on July 29, 1867 from Missouri. He named his new community Killeen after his home state of Kentucky. By 1870 the community had grown to over fifty people and two schools were built that year: Killeen Male School (later renamed Midway High School) and Killeen Female School. In 1872 a post office was established at Kilgore with Wm Hays as the first mail carrier. In 1874 John Hill built a log cabin on an old cypress tree lot which became known as "Hill House". The house still stands today and can be seen from Main Street in Kilgore. When it was built, Hill was one of the most influential men in early Kilgore because he owned most of the land within its boundaries including parts of present day Midway Village as well as Rockslide and Pecan Grove . In 1875 General Order No 1 ordering all settlers to leave their homes due to health concerns was issued by Lt Colonel J A Curry commanding First Battalion Second Regiment Texas Rangers during Reconstruction Era in America when Texans were allowed back into American society following their civil wars victory over Union forces under General Ulysses S Grant . This order caused great panic among many local farmers who were unable to find food or flee their homes without leaving behind their families . Some people did manage to escape but many others died from exposure or disease brought about by war-time conditions . In 1876 James Gist married Sarah McNaughton who lived near Pecan Grove at that time; they would have six children before she died in 1906 In 1880 Rockdale Post Office opened providing service for all five towns within Kerr Counties except Midway which still served through 1885 thanks to storekeeper Mrs Lizzie Scudders running her business out of her home until then.. In 1886 whenMidway village merged with rockslide village it lost its post office so rockdale took over providing mail service until 1907 when that too closed down due to lack of customers On February 25th 1907 Judge R E Woods presided over an eviction hearing against residents of Midway Village who had taken up residency there since it merger 13 months earlier ; after a heated argument betweenwood's court appointed jury and some angry inhabitants mid way students staged a sit-in outside the courthouse until late evening resulting in several arrests

The earliest settlers in what is now Kilgore came from Tennessee in droves during the early 1800s seeking new land to call their own. By 1881, there were already five families living in what is now downtown Kilgore when it became an official town site under state regulation. The name "Kilgore" originated with John W. Kilgore who purchased 1/8th of a square mile (0.3 km2) of land along Buffalo Bayou for $600 on July 4th, 1881. The original town plat included three buildings - one for the sheriff’s office and two stores - which are still standing today on Main Street between First Avenue and Elm Street. The first post office opened in 1886 and until 1907 there was only one mail route serving all of Texas - that through Austin! It wasn't until 1909 that postal service arrived from Houston via Stagecoach Road which connected Dallas with San Antonio then Onalaska County via Lufkin & Orange counties before terminating at Fort Worth! During World War I (1914-18), kilgloren enlisted in the United States Army where he served as an Infantry Sergeant with Company A 3rd Battalion 16th Regiment Colorado Infantry Regiment stationed at Camp Bowie near El Paso Cityalongside his wife Nannie Elizabeth (née Browning). After discharge from military service they moved to McKinney where they resided until her death in 1922; also living here were their son Royce Jnr.; daughter Betty Joanne; grandson Darrell K.; sister Lois Joy Nicholson; brother Forrest Ellerbe; sisters Anna Mae Jarvis & Mildred White Rhodes; father-in-law James Tatum & mother-in-law Jennie Hogue Broughton. They returned to McKinney after her death but ultimately sold their interest here permanently due to health reasons circa 1948 . For much of its history KilgORE has been known for its cattle herdings – both big menured ranches and smaller family operated operations – making it both an important local center for agriculture production dating back to early days when products like hay, oats and cotton were exported throughout North America by horse or wagon trainloads! Cattle drives would often last weeks or even months ending up Eidling Plain near present day Council Bluffs due east of Interstate 10 just outside Fayetteville Gardens! Kilgore was founded in 1876 by John D. Kilgore and his wife, Sarah. The town was named for the nearby Hill Country hills and for the Indian chief who had helped persuade Texas to become a state. The Kilgores were early settlers in what is now Dallas County, Texas. In 1892, they erected a school building that still stands today. In 1916, Kilgore became an independent city and mayor, George C. Wallace served as its first mayor.
