Kilgore is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,651 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Kilgore was John Weldon, who arrived in 1836. By 1840, Kilgore had a school and post office. In 1847, Thomas J. Krieger founded a cotton gin in Kilgore to processing the large crop of cotton that year. In 1851, John Fenton established a sawmill and gristmill in Kilgore; these mills remain active to this day. The townsite of KilgORE was platted on November 3, 1870 by Wm Hance as part of the Towne Plan for Austin-Round Rock submitted to the Texas Legislature on December 5th that same year In 1865 ( concurrent with the start of Reconstruction), Kilgore became an independent civil parish under Hudspeth County jurisdiction. On July 1st 1867 it absorbed portions of Walnut Creek and Slaughtertown according to an act of the General Assembly passed on July 4th which sets out "the boundaries between these two parishes" In 1898 when Austin became one municipality, much effort was made by residents within Hudspeth County to incorporate their town into Austin proper but no action was taken until 1915 when Kilgores incorporation petition was accepted Kilgrove's incorporation as a town came about because there were numerous requests from residents within Hudspeth County for incorporation into Austin proper despite its smaller population size

Kilgore was founded by the Lipan Apache in 1847. The town was named for General John F. Kilgore, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as a U.S. Senator from Texas. In 1903, Kilgore became a city and was renamed for Governor James Fenton Kilgore. In 1926, the city limits were expanded to include present-day Arlington County. The population of Kilgore peaked at over sixty thousand in 1960, but has since declined due to migration and other factors. Today, the town remaining a small rural community with a handful of homes and businesses serving its residents primarily as agricultural landholders and ranch hands.
In 1836, Andrew Jackson was elected president of the United States and he appointed Kilgore as commissioner of Indian Affairs. This position allowed him to interact with the Native Americans in order to Treaty/negotiate treaties that would protect their rights. He also helped create the Texas Frontier School District and increased trade between Texans and the Indians.
