Kilgore's best known resident may be its namesake John W. Kilgore whose contributions to both the town and country include being an entrepreneur with two successful businesses - Pecan Pie Manufacturing Company and Cooking Gas Station - as well as helping start Kilgore High School in 1924. Other notable residents have included current Mayor Donny Hathaway (1948-present) as well as State Representative Donna Frye(1991-2004). Some things that make up the typical day life of people living in Kilgore are farming activities such as raising livestock; fishing for bass, catfish, trout, lakeshores fish fry; hunting squirrels on private land; playing golf on one or more courses scattered around town; enjoying local attractions like swimming at Slaughtertown Lake or hiking through tall grass prairies near Slough Meadows Park; taking advantage of free community events like summer concerts at Auditorium Theatre or harvest festivals at Wilson Mill Garden amphitheater

Kilgore, Texas is a small town in the Midland County seat of Commerce City. The population was 1,534 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the Houston metropolitan area and is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land Combined Statistical Area. Kilgore is known for its oil wells and natural gas production. The first inhabitants of what is now Kilgore were Native Americans who hunted game in the area during pre-historic times. The town was founded by John Kirby in 1876 as a result of his land grant from President Ulysses S. Grant. By 1902, Kirby had finished grading and selling his land to developers, including Samuel Mellon and J.P. Morgan Jr., who named it after their father John P Morgan Sr.. In 1916, Kilgore became a city when two adjoining towns merged to form it – White Settlement to the north and east and Commerce City to the south – creating what is known today as Greater Kilgore. In 1951, an oil well was drilled in what would become Kilgore swamp; this led to increased development around that well with subsequent hydraulic fracturing (fracking) techniques becoming more popular throughout North America due to their potential To supply new sources of energy such as natural gas and petrochemical extraction from shale formations underbelly deeper than ever before! With this boom came an increase in chemical spills and accidents - both local residents were often powerless to stop these things due to jurisdictional limitations placed on municipalities by state government bureaucrats who saw oil drilling being seen as synonymous with jobs growth & economic stimulus! In 2006, following years of community activism spearheaded by Mayor Clyde Hodge & Chamber members Joe Garza & Donny Romero amongst others (the community had also organized “Oil Well Day” demonstrations opposing routine Frack fluid flow near our schools), Gov George W Bush signed into law PubL 111-246 which quashed all environmental regulation related thereto within 100 miles radiusof any major oil field operations or stimulation activity! This repeal effectively nullified all laws passed since 1976& left open up vast amounts of unenforced regulations that continue unchecked today!! This has resulted in numerous ecological disasters like water shortages, air pollution levels skyrocketing etc., along with huge spills across many rural areas adjacentto large refineries/pipelines still active today despite numerous health risks associated therewith!
Kilgore was founded by pioneers in 1881. The town was named for John A. Kilgore, a landowner and surveyor who donated the land to the community. The first post office was established in 1882, and the first store opened in 1886. The town grew quickly and soon had a population of around 100 residents. In 1907, Kilgore became a city, and its mayor was elected by popular vote. In 1912, Kilgore lost its mayoral election to Edwin Davenport, but regained its status as a city in 1916 when Davenport resigned after being indicted for perjury. By 1920, Kilgore had grown to over 1,000 residents and had built several businesses including a bank and insurance company. During World War II, Kilgore served as an airfield for the USAAF during the war effort. After the war ended, the town began to decline until it stopped growing altogether in the 1970s. Today, there are only a few remaining buildings from earlier years left standing in what once was an important stop on Texas’ transportation network
