In 1892, Kilgore became one of ten towns consolidated into Hudspeth County by an act of Congress under the Morrill Act. The county seat was moved to Athens in 1916. The pharmaceutical company Pfizer Inc., headquartered in nearby Lewisville, founded its first plant here in 1965 and later increased production until it had two plants here total by 1997; now it employs over 1,000 people on five sites across three counties. Other major employers include Dow Chemical Company (DOW) and AlliedBrick Industries Inc., both located about 10 miles west of town on I-610; based outside Lewisville but deeply embedded within its community; and Tyson Foods Incorporated (), which operates several large processing plants scattered throughout central Texas adjacent to downtown Killeen.

Kilgore is a small town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Fort Worth–Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to see what was now Kilgore was José de Avilés on July 29, 1769 when he landed on the shore of what is now Clearwater Bay and charted it as "Kilgore" after his native village of Gualeguaychum in present-day Paraguay. Avilés named a bay for his ship La Victoria after reaching this location on July 15th and 16th while en route from Santa Fe to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A post office called Kilgore was established in 1872, and remained in operation until 1903. From 1872-1903 it was known as Fort Worth. In 1902, Fort Worth annexed much of Tarrant County including much of present day Kilgore Township. The name change happened because Fort Worth had been more populous than Arlington (the new county seat) so they wanted an identifier for their growing city center area that included parts of both counties which were then still considered part of Tarrant County. In 1927 the last company town west of Interstate 10 opened up with 5 stores and no services like water or sewer service; this townsite became known as Ft Worth's "Granada Shopping Center". The lack of services led to its closure in 1978 by then private developer Donnybrook Companies Limited Partnership who built a shopping mall there instead with all services moved into it such as water and sewer hookups along with restaurants and other businesses that took over these vacant storefronts during its construction phase; today Granada Shopping Center still stands vacant although several apartments have been converted into retail units since its closurecirca 1987-1988
