Kilgore, Texas is a small town in Webb County, Texas and is the seat of government. The population was 2,154 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of Webb County, about 15 miles south of Austin and 45 miles northwest of Dallas. The first settler in Kilgore was James Hogg. He arrived in 1836 and named his land "Kilgore." The original post office was established in 1839, but it did not open until 1845. In 1865, Battle Creek Road (now Loop 820) was built through Kilgore, making it an important crossroads for early settlers. In 1909, school Superintendent J.W. Baird decided to move the county seat from Austin to Kilgore because he felt that Austin's growth would outstrip that of Webb County's. The first public school opened in Kilgore on November 1, 1909 (one week after its opening). In 1916–1917 a major flood destroyed most of the town center and killed many people; this event is known as the Great Flood of 1916-1917. Aftermaths included rebuilding and annexations of surrounding counties by Webb County into which Kilgore had been annexed without any vote by the residents or input from those responsible for its formation; this occurred primarily during World War II when many men served in military camps within Webb County adjacent to KilgORE
In 1836, the Republic of Texas was admitted to the Union as a new state. The area now known as Kilgore was then part of San Antonio County.
