In 1934, the townspeople decided to rename themselves after John Fenton Kilgore Sr., their then-mayor and founder of MidtownDallas—an event that helped revive interest in the town after years of neglect. Today, many residents still refer to themselves as "Kilgarians." In 1948, KILGORE HIGH SCHOOLopened its doors on Main Street just east of Interstate 35E! This new high school helped shape what would become one of America’s most vibrant high schools districts – serving students from all over Dallas County! With more than 1,200 students enrolled there today (in 2019), “The Lady Bears” have been providing quality education for young people since 1949!
In 1885, Kilgore was founded on the banks of the Brazos River. The town became a stop on the Santa Fe Trail and soon began to grow. By 1912, Kilgore had become a city with a population of over 100 people. In 1930, Kilgore was renamed to honor General Sam Houston.
