Kilgore, Texas is an unincorporated community in Lampasas County, Texas, United States. It lies along the Brazos River and was named for John Kilgore, a landowner who donated land to the town. The community had a post office from 1899 to 1907. The first white settler in Kilgore was James Crouch. He and his family arrived in 1851 from Kentucky. They operated a ferry across the river until 1854 when they began farming on their own property. In 1859, they married Anne Hargrave and moved to their present location. By 1870, the Crouch family had acquired additional land east of Kilgore and started growing cotton. A steam engine was purchased in 1902 and two more houses were built that year; one for Mrs. Crouch (the widow of James) and her son-in-law Wm Fenton, Jr., who served as manager of the local stores while also working as a doctor at nearby Lamar University. The store continued to be open until 1958 when it burned down due to faulty wiring
